Alexandrea Safiq is a Ph.D. candidate in ecology and evolution at Rutgers University. Her research aims to bridge the gap between marine ecology and policy formation. She studies marine policy, natural resource management, and marine mammal conservation. Her recent writing on marine mammal conservation and public engagement with policy appears in Scientific American. Her dissertation work includes analysis of state-level implementation of ecosystem-based fisheries management on the U.S. east coast, exploring biocultural homogenization on coral reefs off the coast of florida, and a systematic review on marine mammal and fishery interactions. Alex will complete her doctorate in winter 2018. Prior to her graduate studies, Alex acquired a double major bachelors of science in environmental science and astronomy from Union College.
